Like Norway, fiords are a big tourist atraction. We decided to take a day off paddling and be "regular" tourists.

Milford Sound isn't a sound - it's a fiord. Therefore it should be named Milford Fiord.

We went for a climb up the hill to get to the creek that makes the Bowen Fall. The pipeline was slippery!

We went back a second time to Milford to do a cruise. This time it had rained a lot which made the waterfalls bigger.

In Fiordlands it rains a lot, about 9 meters a year. Which is about the same amount of rain that pours down in Bergen each year. But this year, New Zealand had the worst draught in 80 years. Even though the rivers were a bit low, I didn't complain about the nice weather.

After paddling the Hooker, we drove down from the Southern Alps plateau towards the east coast in order to paddle the Rangitata.

We encountered a few sheeps on our way to the get in. I learned that sheeps are unpredictable animals that love to hide in the ditch and jump right in front of your car.

The Rangitata started quite slow with a long flat section. But the adrenalin started pumping as soon as we arrived at the gorge. Retrospectively, it would have been better to just walk up to the top of the gorge than doing the long drive to the official get in.

Hooker River

The first river to paddle after leaving Queenstown was the Hooker. I had already been here with Mari a couple of weeks before and was very pleased to get the opportunity to paddle this glacier river.

Walking from the camping ground. Lesson learned: Never leave your paddling gear outdoors when there are Kias in the area. The cute parrot lookalike love plastic and rubber and during the night they managed to pearce a few drytops and spay-skirts

The Hooker River actually starts from the terminal lake of the Hooker glacier, but we only did the lower part from the terminal lake of the Mueller glacier.

In August, I flew over the Tasman Sea to attend MEDINFO 2007 in Brisbane, Australia. MEDINFO is a world congress in health informatics. I submitted a short poster paper early in 2007 which was accepted, and I was there to present the poster.

Mid-winter (July) I went to the east coast north of Auckland... the destination was Langes Beach.

Since I was the only Viking amongst us - at least from Northern Norway, I had to test the water. It wasn't that cold - almost like mid-summer temperature where I come from.

The night ended with All Blacks humiliating the Australian Wallabies.

The All Blacks is New Zealand's national rugby team. Kiwis are really proud of them and Norwegian soccer enthusiasm is nothing compared to the Kiwis' passion for this game. When All Blacks lost the quarter finals in the world cup, there was a collective depression in the nation.

It was not love at first sight. The city might not be the most beautiful in the world, but as soon as you are outside the city limits, heaven waits. I arrived at Auckland Airport five in the morning July 7th 2007. After waiting for over an hour for the biosecurity team to clean my tent from dangerous Norwegian biology, I met Alex, Ellen and Kelly.

Kelly and I stayed at the same Hostel for a week and I had a great time sharing a flat with her the second semester. Something that contributed to Canadian English in my vocabulary and she now suffers from a bit of a Norwegian accent.

Auckland's most striking feature is probably its huge Asian population. The Asian culture is visible everywhere you go and sometimes it feels like living in an Asian country.

Finally, the day has come... to leave my country to stay at the opposite side of the world for a year. Escapism? Not really. Rather curiosity.

My stay in New Zealand has two main purposes. Firstly, to finish my master thesis in computer science at the University of Auckland (UoA). Secondly, to kayak as much as possible in some of the most beautiful rivers in the world.
